"At the same time, the word ”religion,” which kept coming up again and again in his mind, bothered him. To the skeptic inside him it suggested unquestioning obedience and mental suicide. In order for him to be drawn into religion, any religion, he would have to make contact with its intellectual traditions. He would have to find that part of its theology which was still alive, still profound, ethically complex and in creative flux. It would not do for him to begin at the point of faith: he knew now that he could not except such heroism from himself. Since he was a man who lived in his mind, he would have to approach this at first through the mind."
